THE ROLE OF CHILDREN IN FAMILY AND CHURCH

3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT SUNDAY OF 27th JANUARY 2019

You are most welcome for today’s service in the mighty name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Today is children’s Sunday. They are the ones leading us.

Children have a very significant role to play in the family and in the church and also to note that the roles played by children are extremely important in healthy family functioning and the church as well.

It is true that children are the future generation and therefore parents have the role to tame them as well as direct them towards that direction. Proverbs 22:6 is very instructive in regards to this as it requires parents to show the children the way to go so when they age, they will not depart from it. Children are innately good and will grow up to be good adults as long as their parents do not mess them up.

Children are expected to co-operate and respect their parents. Exodus 20:12 requires children to honour their parents so that they may live long in the land the Lord is giving them. Further to state, Ephesians 6:1-3. Children are called upon to obey their parents in the Lord for this is right.

As family members age, the children take on additional roles such as becoming a spouse, parents and great grandparents. This is a clear indication that children are the future generation.

Children have a role to help in chores around the home. This applies to both the boy and girl child. Chores may include cooking, washing utensils etc. This also helps the children to acquire basic skills which are very helpful

In regard to the role of the children in the church,

It is important to note that children are not only the children of tomorrow, they are a vital part of the church today therefore it is really important to minister to children.

Children have the role to involve in ministry very significantly. Children are at liberty to engage in any kind of ministry as may be called upon the Lord God. This involvement is rather very instrumental in the growth of the kingdom of God.

Children in the church must be different from the others who don’t value church. Children in the church are pivotal to a fundamental change in the church, the family and the nation at large; therefore, children have the role to cause a positive change by leading others to God. Taking a lead in Ministry has nothing to do with age therefore what the adults have done, the children can do the same or even better and greater.

In conclusion, as stake holders i.e. parents, friends, elders, teachers and the community at large, we have a significant role to play in directing the children to know their various roles in the family and in the church.
