God’s goodness through patience – 2nd Sunday Before Lent – 23rd February 2025

As we gather today on the 2nd Sunday before Lent, we were reminded of God’s goodness through His patience. Ms. Sunday Akech, our preacher for the day, brought a powerful message on how God’s patience with us is not only an act of His love, but also a deep expression of His goodness. In the readings for today—Psalms 103:8-11, 2 Peter 3:8-15, and Luke 15:11-24—God’s patience is showcased as He gives us time to turn back to Him, even when we stray.

Sermon Reflection: God’s Goodness Through Patience

Ms. Akech’s sermon spoke to us about the boundless patience of our Heavenly Father. In Psalm 103:8-11, we are reminded that God is slow to anger, abounding in love, and filled with compassion. The psalmist paints a picture of a God who chooses to forgive, showing mercy instead of judgment, which reflects His deep goodness. No matter how far we may wander, God is always ready to embrace us with open arms.

In 2 Peter 3:8-15, we were reminded that God’s timeline is not like ours. While we often grow impatient, God’s patience is a reflection of His love, giving all people time to repent and return to Him. The apostle Peter encourages us to not lose heart when we do not see immediate answers but trust that God’s patience is a sign of His desire for us to come into a relationship with Him.

Finally, the parable of the prodigal son from Luke 15:11-24 encapsulates the theme of God’s patience perfectly. The father waits for his son’s return, and when he does return, he is met with compassion and joy, not condemnation. This story serves as a powerful reminder of God’s open arms, always waiting for us to come back home.

Ms. Akech’s message challenges us to also reflect on how we show patience to others, especially in a world that often seeks immediate results. Just as God extends His mercy to us, we too are called to be patient and forgiving toward those around us.
